It is a key agricultural powerhouse in West Africa, is renowned for its production of peanuts and cashew nuts, two critical exports driving its economy.
The Kaolack, Kaffrine, and Fatick regions form the heart of Senegal’s “Groundnut Basin,” collectively producing around 1.7 million metric tons of peanuts annually. This makes it a leading peanut exporter, with China as a primary destination.
In the south, the Casamance region (Ziguinchor, Sedhiou, and Kolda) leads in cashew production, supported by emerging plantations in Tambacounda. Producing over 65,000 metric tons of cashew nuts, it exports predominantly to India and Vietnam. Efforts to boost local processing aim to enhance value addition and economic growth.
It is a net food importer, particularly for rice, which represents almost 75% of cereal imports.
